World Congress
The ITI World Congress is a meeting for representatives of the ITI centers from all continents.
The World Congress of the International Theatre Institute is the most important global forum for exchange among theatre practitioners. Since the ITI was founded in 1948, the Congress has served as a central meeting place for discussing the future of theatre, international cooperation and the social responsibility of the performing arts. Its significance lies in promoting international dialogue and cultural understanding across borders. The Congress provides a space to reflect on current developments in the performing arts, to generate new artistic impulses and to develop joint strategies for the future.
At a time of global upheaval and social tensions, the World Congress creates a platform where art is understood as a unifying language. Here, collaborations are initiated, artistic perspectives exchanged and sustainable networks established. Through presentations, workshops and performances, the diversity of global theatre practice is brought to life during the Congress.
Alongside the General Assembly, the meetings of the ITI committees form a central part of the World Congress.
The World Congress is organised by the International Theatre Institute in collaboration with a national ITI centre acting as the local host. Germany hosted the World Congress in 1975 in West Berlin, in 1983 in East Berlin and in 1993 in Munich.
