Theater and Translation offers a variety of formats for translators and theater professionals in the context of translation and adaptation for theater and performance.

International Workshop Mülheim

For the International Workshop Mülheim, translators from 10–12 countries are invited each year to the Mülheim Theatre Festival. The workshop is dedicated to the close connection between practical translation work and engagement with contemporary theatre, staging, and writing practices in German-speaking countries. The focus lies on the translators’ concrete work on texts from the festival selection, attending performances, and collective discussion of the invited productions.

theaterübersetzen.de – Information Portal and Events

theateruebersetzen.de is an information and knowledge platform for translators and theatre professionals. Its goal is to make the many facets of theatre translation more visible in public discourse, to connect practitioners, and to strengthen the related professional practice.

Under the headings TEXT, TRANSFER, TRANSLATION, and ACCESSIBILITY, the platform provides entry points for research and interaction on topics such as contemporary drama, drama translation, theatre practice, and adaptation. The Accessibility section offers information on basic access options, audio description, sign language, and surtitles in the context of theatre and performance.

In addition, the Knowledge A–Z section contains a glossary of keywords related to theatre and translation, along with a database through which translators with theatre experience can be searched. The self-managed profiles of theatre translators provide information on language combinations, previous theatre experience, and additional professional specializations.

Digital exchange formats and specialist events such as LESERAUM, DIALOGRAUM, and WERKRAUM are offered regularly.

At LESERAUM, two recent texts from contemporary German-language drama are presented and read together with the authors. The WERKRAUM series focuses on in-depth exploration of specific questions arising from translation practice, while DIALOGRAUM introduces various international theatre scenes.

Branchentreff Theater Übersetzen

The BRANCHENTREFF THEATER ÜBERSETZEN was initiated by the International Theatre Institute and seeks to examine the diverse aspects of translation within contemporary theatre practice while supporting networking between translators, authors, theatres, and publishers.

In cooperation with the Maxim Gorki Theater, the first industry meeting took place in 2022. Its focus was on increasing the visibility of theatre translation and accessibility, as well as fostering professional exchange.

The second industry meeting focused on the current production conditions of contemporary drama and translation. Alongside an open networking and discussion format, six readings of German-language theatre texts and texts available in German translation were presented. The event was organized in cooperation with the Association of Theatre Authors (VTheA).

In collaboration with the Autorentheatertage / Deutsches Theater Berlin, the third industry meeting focused particularly on the theme “International Drama and Festivals.” In addition, three author–translator tandems were given the opportunity for a two-day working residency in Berlin and a joint reading at the conclusion of the meeting.

Forum Theater Übersetzen

The Forum Theater Übersetzen is a practice-oriented professional development program for translators working into German. In collaboration with various international festivals, translators are commissioned to produce a play translation, which is then presented as either a staged reading or a full production within the framework of the respective festival.
